Since September 16, 2022, protestors in Iran have risen up and been killed by the
government, numbering in the hundreds. Unrest was first sparked by the violent death
of Jina (Mahsa) Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who was beaten and tortured for
showing too much hair by the Morality police that enforces what they consider to be
proper hejab. Almost immediately, protestors began to voice grievances about broad
human rights abuses at the hands of the government after the Iranian Revolution of
1979. From school-aged youth bravely defying dress codes the protestor base has
expanded to encompass Iranians from every corner of the country uniting against the
Islamic Republic of Iran with the slogan Jin Jian Azadi: Women, Life, Freedom! It is a
slogan inspired from the unique and incredible Kurdish women struggle, an ongoing
fight centred on women's rights as a necessary step to human rights for all.

As a group of Montreal artists, individuals, and organizations, we too believe in our
responsibility for a better future for all. It is our goal through organizing 3 days of
theatrical performance, visual art exhibition, fundraising and panel discussion to engage
Montrealers in learning about and amplifying the struggles not only of Kurdish Iranian
women like Jina (Mahsa) Amini, but of all Iranian women, and of all Iranian people!

Come visit our beautiful exhibition and hopefully be inspired to buy artwork for an
important cause.

Z Gallery with support from Teesri Duniya Theater, Espace Gris Studio, and the Iranian Women's Association have organized these events ** For more information: shahrzad55a@gmail.com
